CHRISTIANITY, THANKSGIVING AND YOU by - Akamike Chika Elizabeth
In every situation you find yourself, always give thanks. UHM!! A very familiar phrase you would say. It is biblical too, you know. Have you thought about this phrase deep enough to make out its real meaning.
Literarily speaking, I believe the saying is well understood by all but spiritually I know that it is not well practiced. ‘Thank you Jesus’, have you said it today? A lot of us Christians only remember God when we are in difficulties, then we wear gloomy faces, pray so hard, and fast so much that we loss 5 kilograms in a week. But on a good day do we remember to thank God and really mean it. Not a lip service “thank you Jesus” but a ‘thank you Jesus’ we actually and sincerely mean. A ‘thank you Jesus’ that expresses our gratitude for all he has done, is doing, and will do. Have you for once thought about his mercies in your life? Am not talking about the big, big things you expect but about the ‘mercy drops’ you get Free of Charge (FOC). Talk of little wishes coming to past; talk of waking up this morning; talk of things you have that others only wish for; talk of His protection over you, despite the fact that you sin all the time; talk of his mercies, we more often than not, take for granted.
Why should I thank Him when I am experiencing so much hurt and pain; why should I thank Him when my father is ill; why should I thank Him when… I have to thank Him because IT COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE. He allows the pain and hurt so your testimony would be complete. He wants you to testify to His goodness hence the challenges, so thank God in advance. He wants you to stop worrying and start thanking. Let your prayers be more of appreciation/gratitude than of request/wants. He knows all our wants, even if you are not a ‘prayerholic’ try being a ‘singerholic’. Sing songs in thanksgiving to HIM, after all, the Bible says he who sings once prays twice.
Give thanks to HIM, your widow’s mite, without prejudice, without grudge and without regret. The Bible makes me to understand that when we give it shall be given unto us ‘good measure, pressed down and running over’- can you imagine that? So thank God always not with leftovers/crumbs from your table, not with dirty notes or ‘change’, not with what is convenient for you, but the juiciest part of what you have. Remember the adage in Igbo that says: ekene onye akidi na nke omere ya akwota ozo (meaning give thanks for what has been done and more will be done)
So dear colleagues, I strongly suggest that you learn to give thanks with all you have, at all times, in all circumstances and for all things.
Ciao
